The American Lady is widespread over the whole of the US but cannot survive very cold winters and so repopulates northwards in the summer. It is identified and separated from the very similar Painted Lady by a series of eyes and spots usually joined near the edge of the hindwing. The Pianted Lady has smaller seperated eyes/spots in this location. The forewing also has a white spot in the first orange area below the dark corner. The underside shows 2 large eyes as opposed to 5 smaller eyes on the Pianted Lady.
