Very common and widespread throughout the southeastern states. Keeps low and has a bouncy flight. It is not a slow flier and can move quickly at times. As with many butterflies there are variations, mainly in the clarity and size of the eye-spots on the underside hind wing. A small brown butterfly seen in woods and particularly at the edges and on tracks. It rarely opens its wings long enough to be studied, other early in the morning when sunning. There is a variant of the Carolina know as the Intricate Satyr that can be separated by the shape of the outer line. You should look at articles available on this subject.
