A familiar butterfly in America and the world at large. The Painted Lady is common across the US but less common in the southeast, including the Big Bend. It can be found it is just not as populous as other parts of the country. As with the American Lady the Painted Lady cannot survive continued freezing temperatures so many overwinter in the south or in Mexico then begin to repopulate north in the Spring. Sometimes the migrations north can be counted in the millions. To separate it from the American Lady look for more than 2 big eyes on the hindwing underside or on the upper surface no white spot in the first orange block below the forewing black corner and small spots or eyes on the base of the hindwing.
