Distribution is much different from the Common with the butterfly restricted to the Gulf coastal areas, Mexico and the southern border states. The butterfly looks, at first glance, the same as the Common Checkered Skipper. However the edge of the forewing is not black and white checkered all the way from bottom to top on the Tropical whereas the Common it is. There is a large ‘tear drop’ spot near the ‘egg-timer’ marking on the forewing of the Tropical and not on the Common.
