Whites, Marbles, Orangetips and Sulphurs are all members of the family Pieridae. They are all white or yellow with predominantly black markings. They are medium sized butterflies in general. There are a few smaller members of the family in the Sulphurs group with the Little Yellow and the Dina Yellow at 1¼”, the Dainty Sulphur at ¾”. The Orangetips are the most colorful being mainly white with orange tips.
- Unusually the coloring of the Pieridae members is largely made from waste products from the body
- The name “butterfly” is believed to have originated from a member of this family, the Brimstone, Gonepteryx rhamni, which was called the “butter-coloured fly” by early British naturalists
