It is generally quite rare and local and likes cane in deeply wooded areas. It is identified from the other Pearly-eyes by location. It is only found in the Southeast overlapping with the Southern Pearly-eye and marginally into the Northern Pearly-eye territories. Secondly it is differentiable by markings on the underside of the forewing. The line below the eyes is very uneven with a large upward curve in the middle, known as a ‘knuckle’. Both the Southern and the Northern have a flat line coming in from the edge.
