Schaus’s Swallowtail is found in the extreme south of Florida, on the northern Keys. It lives in hardwood hammocks. Habitat destruction is probably the main reason for is removal from its original range. Captive breeding programs are now re-establishing its numbers is small focused areas.
It flies just in Late Spring and looks very similar to the Giant Swallowtail excepting that the hind wing tails are black and have no central yellow area and yellow bands on the fore-wing only meet at the tips. The underside hind wing also shows in interesting rust-colored area,
