Gossamer-Winged Butterflies. (Lycaenidae)
The members of group of butterflies are generally small in size though frequently highly colored. Blues and Coppers tend to fly close to the ground and are stop infrequently. Hairstreaks frequently spend their time at heights in the tops of trees.

  • Members of this group’s caterpillars are often flattened rather than cylindrical, and some have glands that may produce secretions that attract and subdue ants. Some are capable of producing vibrations and low sounds that are transmitted through the ground they inhabit. They use these sounds to communicate with ants that look after and protect them. In return the ants receive sugar-rich honeydew from the caterpillars.
